This is a lovely campsite just outside of the village of Ashurst. The site is quite large (280 pitches) but does not have electric hookup anywhere. There is a refreshing “camp where you like” mentality about the site; all that they ask is that you are six metres away from another tent. On the weekend that we went the site had “campsite full” signs up by early on the Friday evening so it is probably a good idea to book in advance.
We left our bus alone and just cycled around for the weekend. Ashurst has a couple of pubs and a few other places to eat (one of the pubs is right outside the entrance to the site) and Lyndhurst is about three miles away and can be reached by cycle path easily. Beaulieu is also within gentle cycling distance and this part of the New Forest at least is easy to get around by bicycle.
Near to the site is a wildlife park that has lots of owls and otters as well as a group of wolves that you can see eating late in the day. We spent several hours here and really enjoyed it.
One thing to note about the site is that there are horses roaming free which is pretty cool, the horses have the longest ‘neigh’ I’ve ever heard, but generally they keep themselves to themselves. The site does not have any playgrounds for children but it backs on to the forest and all of the children we saw were having a great time exploring and cycling around.
